Summary

One of the most common obstacles to using existing data or established research instruments (such as questionnaires) is the challenge of gaining access to them and understanding the conditions for their use in your work. This webinar will address these challenges and equip you with all the key information you need to navigate across established social science surveys in Europe.

Gateway to knowledge: Accessing data from established European social science research programmes

Description

You will learn how to access these datasets, which terms of use and license conditions apply to the reuse of data and documentation, and how to correctly cite them in your work.

At the end of the session, you will have everything at your fingertips to confidently access and reuse the data — relevant links, key guidelines, and insights.

After the event you will:

  • Understand data access to existing social science survey data in Europe.
  • Have clear guidance on the licensing terms and permissions required to reusing data and documentation.
  • Hold practical resources and guidelines to facilitate data access and reuse.
  • Have confidence in using established data and gain the necessary knowledge to effectively incorporate existing datasets into your research.
  • Be able to navigate research requirements – learn if a research ID is required and how to comply with data access policies.

Understand how to properly acknowledge resources used.

About the speakers:

Sergeja Masten is a Data archivist at the Social Science Data Archives (ADP) of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She holds a master’s degree in sociology and has extensive experience in data archiving, research data management and data reuse in the social sciences.

Her work focuses on ensuring the long-term accessibility and usability of research data by overseeing data curation, metadata standards and compliance with open science principles. She actively collaborates with researchers to facilitate data sharing, proper documentation and ethical considerations when reusing data.

Irena Vipavc Brvar is Head of the Department at Social Science Data Archives (ADP) at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. She holds a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Ljubljana and has more than 20 years of experience in data archiving. Her expertise includes research data management, data discovery and promoting the principles of open science.

In her role, Irena is actively involved in national and international projects related to research data management (RDM), GDPR compliance, metadata standards (DDI) and open science initiatives. She offers training courses on RDM and the use of secondary data, aimed at both doctoral students and researchers. She also offers statistical and methodological advice and supports researchers in the curation and long-term preservation of data.
