Tue 9 Apr 2024

The Icelandic Social Science Data Service (DATICE) is the Icelandic infrastructure for Social Science and Humanities (SSH) Data and a CESSDA service provider. Iceland is a member of CESSDA. Hear from Kjartan Ólafsson, Manager of DATICE.

The CESSDA Country Spotlight series showcases national service providers. We interviewed representatives of the national service providers, dear members of the CESSDA community. We asked them about the value CESSDA provides their data archive and vice versa.

The Icelandic Social Science Data Service

DATICE, also known as GAGNÍS in Iceland, is the country's first service dedicated to the acquisition, preservation, and dissemination of quantitative social science data. It is situated at the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) within the University of Iceland. The primary mission of DATICE is to develop research infrastructures and to provide broad access to quantitative social science data, adhering to the FAIR principles.

The service offers a range of support to researchers, including training in data management and guidance on matters related to methodology and research ethics. By following the FAIR principles, which stand for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable, DATICE aims to ensure that the data it handles are easily discoverable and usable for further research.

DATICE serves as a central resource for social science researchers in Iceland, offering data management services and ethical and methodological advice, all while adhering to international best practices.

Kjartan Ólafsson on CESSDA's resources

“Without having access to all the resources in CESSDA, it would have been absolutely impossible to develop DATICE to where it is now!” Kjartan Ólafsson, Manager of DATICE.
