Slovenian research community receives a Slovenian-language handbook on open science
Wed 13 Nov 2024

The Slovenian Social Science Data Archives has published "SPOZNAJ FAIR", a Slovenian-language handbook on open science.

The handbook on open science in Slovenian, titled SPOZNAJ FAIR. Priročnik o odprti znanosti v Sloveniji (ed. Bezjak, 2024) was published in mid-September 2024. The Slovenian Social Science Data Archives led the activities for the preparation of the handbook, which is a product of collaboration of experts across eight public research organizations and libraries

With nine thoughtfully curated chapters, this handbook is an invaluable resource for researchers, policy makers, and anyone interested in how Slovenia is embracing the open science movement. The introductory chapters present the development of the idea and principles of open science and the provisions on open science in Slovenia. Readers are introduced to the strategic and legal basis for open science in Slovenia, the main national documents and the documents of public research organizations in Slovenia in the field of open science.

This is followed by chapters on the research lifecycle in open science, documenting research results, research infrastructure and open licensing. The chapter on research results in open science details the challenges of working with research data, software and open source, and access to scientific publications in open science. Special chapters are devoted to open reviews and citizen science, both of which are still in their early stages in Slovenia. The final chapter is an attempt to define the responsibilities of the different actors in the implementation of open science.

A particularly important added value of the handbook is the Dictionary of Open Science in the Slovene Language, which serves as a significant contribution to the development and standardization of professional terminology in Slovenian. By addressing inconsistencies and inaccuracies caused by relying on English-language sources, the authors aim to ensure clearer, more accurate translations of open science concepts. This effort not only fosters a more unified vocabulary but also enhances the understanding and application of open science principles across the Slovenian research community. The handbook is a result of the national project SPOZNAJ, which aims to ensure that public research organizations align their procedures with the Law on Scientific Research and Innovation, the Regulation on the Conduct of Scientific Research Activities in accordance with the principles of open science, and respect the practices and principles of open science in the European Research Area.

The handbook is published in printed form, but is also available in PDF and html versions:
