EMM Survey Registry seeks contributions
Following the webinar co-organized by ESFRI, SSHOC, Horizon Europe, and the National research Foundation of Ukraine, there was significant interest in mapping surveys on Ukrainians living across Europe.
This initiative resulted in a collection of data sources detailing studies, surveys, and datasets related to Ukrainians living and working abroad, as well as those seeking refuge in other countries. However, in the process, a key resource emerged that has already compiled extensive survey data on this topic: the Ethnic and Migrant Minority (EMM) Survey Registry.
What is the EMM Survey Registry?
The EMM Survey Registry is a comprehensive database of quantitative surveys conducted with ethnic and migrant minority (EMM) populations across Europe and beyond. It provides survey-level metadata that allows researchers to explore different datasets using advanced filtering, sorting, and search features. This registry has proven invaluable for scholars seeking to understand migration patterns, integration processes, and the social and economic conditions of migrant communities.
Notably, the registry already includes over 140 surveys conducted with Ukrainian refugees, with more than 200 survey waves expected to be published soon. Covering 34 European countries, the EMM Survey Registry serves as a critical resource for researchers studying the Ukrainian diaspora.
An Invitation to Contribute
The EMM team is calling on researchers who have conducted surveys involving Ukrainian refugees to contribute their survey metadata to the registry. By sharing metadata, contributors help expand the repository of available data, enabling a broader understanding of migration trends and the experiences of displaced populations. Researchers can follow the instructions on the Registry’s landing page to submit their data and may also reach out for assistance at ethmigsurveydata@sciencespo.fr.
The Future of EMM and Potential Expansion to Ukraine
Currently, the EMM Survey Registry does not include surveys conducted within Ukraine, as the registry's scope is limited to data from ethnic and migrant minorities across different countries. Expanding the registry’s coverage to include Ukraine would require a dedicated team of researchers willing to contribute metadata for surveys conducted from 2000 onward. However, it is important to note that the EMM Survey Registry does not cover surveys targeting internally displaced populations within any given country, including Ukraine.
Researchers interested in taking on this responsibility are encouraged to reach out to the EMM Survey Registry at ethmigsurveydata@sciencespo.fr. By doing so, they can help establish a more comprehensive and structured database that supports both academic research and evidence-based policymaking.
Join the Effort
The EMM Survey Registry stands as a valuable tool for researchers, policymakers, and institutions looking to access high-quality survey data on ethnic and migrant populations. By contributing metadata and expanding the scope of the registry, researchers can play a key role in shaping the future of migration research.
